PS Remote Play is a free to use feature on all PS4 and PS5 consoles. All you need is: Your PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition, PS4 or PS4 Pro 2 connected to your home wired broadband network. A compatible device – also connected to your network. Or, simply say 'Hey Google, play Netflix on my TV' and it can do that too without you even touching the remote. Watching shows & movies on here is truly a great experience too! The 4K HDR is vibrant and crisp, it has Dolby Vision for movies/TV that it applies to, and Dolby Atmos for superior home theater sound quality.
I have a big library of movies and tv shows with 5 or 6 family and friends that remote view. I have always downloaded my content as mkv, ac3 or e-ac3 5.1 Audio for my home theater system. That format works great for me but ALWAYS transcodes to my remote viewers. Searches online always bring back “its hard to direct play remote because it depends on everyone’s else’s hardware etc”
Well I Direct Play makes everyone’s life much easier as far as your equipment, connection etc so I finally figured it out. Takes a little more time on front end but worth it
Download movies as usual. Open that movie file in handbrake. Keep or change the container to mp4 bc mp4 is the universal container that will play on all devices. That’s the video part. If it’s mkv, it will not “direct play”
Now for audio, keep it change the FIRST audio on line 1 to aac. Always make the first one aac because that is the universal audio that is most widely accepted for devices. Now click “add” and add ac3 or e-ac3 , and change stereo to 5.1. This allows you to let your remote viewers watch your video as mp4 w/ aac 2.0 Audio and allows you to pick ac3 or e-ac3 5.1 Dolby at home if you have a surround sound. Mp4 containers can hold more the one audio source.
Last, importantly if your file is 1080p, make sure you allow your remote viewers to view your content in 1080p and make sure they go in their settings on the plex app they are using and select 1080p. This is bc is you download 1080p movies but you only allow them to view 720p content, it’s going to transcode down to 720p.

Learn some basics
- Touch surface: To move around the screen, swipe up, down, left, or right. To select an item, highlight it, then press to click the Touch surface. To scroll through lists, quickly swipe up or down multiple times. If an index is next to the list, swipe right, then highlight a letter to go to that place in the list.
- Menu: Press one time to wake your Apple TV if it's asleep. While browsing, press one time to return to the previous screen. Press and hold to go to the Home screen.
- Apple TV App/Home: Press one time to wake your Apple TV if it's asleep. To see your recently used apps, double press Apple TV App/Home. If your country or region supports the Apple TV App, press Apple TV App/Home to open the app, and again to go to the Home screen. If not, press Apple TV App/Home one time to go back to the Home screen.
Play content
To play or pause movies, shows, songs, and more, press to click the Touch surface of your remote or press Play/Pause . You can also fast-forward, rewind, find special features, and more.
Go forward
- Press Play/Pause or click the Touch surface to highlight the song or video timeline. Then swipe to the right on the Touch surface to go forward. Click the right side of the Touch surface to play the next song or video.
Go back
- Press Play/Pause or click the Touch surface to highlight the song or video timeline. Then swipe to the left on the Touch surface to go back. Click the left side of the Touch surface to play the previous song or video.
With the latest version of tvOS, you can follow along as a song plays with time-synced lyrics. Use the Touch surface to scroll up or down to any verse in the song. Then click the Touch surface to begin playing the song from that spot.

- Video: Swipe down during playback, then swipe right to browse available options. If available, you'll see settings like subtitles, closed captioning, video chapters, audio, and speaker settings.
- Audio: Choose a song and press Play/Pause to play it. Then press Menu to see all of the tracks on the album or playlist. From here you can shuffle your playlist, repeat a song, change your AirPlay device, and more. The options you see might vary.
